Picente: Flags at Half-Staff to Honor Memory of WWI Veterans
Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente, Jr., announced today that flags will be flown at half-staff in memory of Army Corporal Frank W. Buckles, and in remembrance of all of our World War I veterans. Corporal Buckles was the last surviving American veteran of WWI. Picente also issued a proclamation honoring all World War I veterans and their families.
“ On this day of the interment of our last surviving World War I Veteran, Army Corporal Frank W. Buckles, it is important to honor the memories of all World War 1 Veterans and their families. These individuals showed courage and heroism to protect the freedom that identifies our nation, a freedom that we fought for and that is unparalleled,” said Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente, Jr.
An excerpt from the proclamation states that, “It is fitting that Oneida County, as the home of a pivotal conflict in the American Revolution and the home town of generations of soldiers who have defended the cause of freedom in all the conflicts of our nation, pays a just and fitting tribute to the service of the veterans of World War I.’’
Corporal Buckles received a number of medals for his service, including the World War I Victory Medal. He is to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
