5th Annual Intergenerational Fall Clean-Up

The multiple award-winning 5th Annual Intergenerational Fall Clean-Up collaboration between the Oneida County Youth Bureau, the Oneida County Office for the Aging and Continuing Care, Oneida County colleges, school districts, and youth organizations had 528 youth volunteers deliver general yard clean-up services to 101 senior citizen locations county-wide. This was the third consecutive fall clean-up in which over 500 youth volunteers participated and the fourth consecutive fall clean-up in which they cleaned over 100 senior citizens’ yards!

“The success of our Annual Intergenerational Spring and Fall Clean-Ups is a direct result of our dedicated, committed, and hardworking youth volunteers and their mentors,” Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente, Jr. said. Picente added, “Our Oneida County senior citizens, who no longer can physically do the work or financially afford to have the work done for them, have benefitted tremendously from their volunteer efforts. They continue to remind us that there is good in our youth, in our world and Oneida County is a special place to live.”

These 528 remarkable youth volunteers represented the following colleges, school districts and youth organizations; Utica College’s Honors Association, League of Extraordinary Nerds, Chi Beta Sigma Sorority, Theta Phi Alpha Sorority, Women’s Lacrosse Team, Asian Student Union, Physical Therapist Society, Men’s Hockey Team, Circle K Club, Justice Studies, GNT 101 Introduction to Gerontology and Women’s Softball, Hamilton College’s Women’s Ice Hockey Team, Men’s Basketball Team, Women’s Basketball Team, Men’s Lacrosse Team, Men’s Tennis Team and HAVOC, Mohawk Valley Community College’s Returning Adult Students Association, Welders Among Communities, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, International Club and GEAR UP, Pratt at Munson-Williams-Proctor, Proctor High School’s Key Club, Young Scholars Program and Youth Construction Initiative Program, Notre Dame Junior/Senior High School’s Boys’ Basketball Team and National Honor Society, Remsen Central High School’s Government Class, Utica Academy of Science Charter School, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central High School’s National Honor Society and Interact Club, Sauquoit Valley Central High School’s National Honor Society, New Hartford Central High School’s National Honor Society, Whitesboro Central High School’s Varsity and Junior Varsity Girls’ Soccer Teams, Clinton Central High School’s Field Hockey Team, Upstate Cerebral Palsy’s Utica and Rome Campuses, John Bosco House, Boy Scout Troop 21 of the America Revolutionary Trails Council, The House of the Good Shepherd, Utica Safe Schools/Healthy Students Underground Café, the Slavic Pentecostal Youth Group and the Humiston Family from Rome.

“I have been honored and extremely fortunate to have met and worked with these incredible young men and women and their mentors,” Youth Bureau Director Bob Roth said. Roth added, “I’m continually amazed at their willingness to help, their amazing work ethic, their wonderful, upbeat attitudes, and their unparalleled commitment to community!”

The 6th Annual intergenerational Spring Clean-Up is scheduled for Saturday, May 3rd, and Sunday, May 4th, 2014. The 6th Annual Intergenerational Fall Clean-Up is scheduled for Saturday, October 25th, and Sunday, October 26th, 2014.
