Picente Declares State of Emergency

Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente, Jr. today declared a State of Emergency in Oneida County as County government and all of its local municipalities are dealing with the effects of Hurricane Irene.

There have been reports of flash flooding throughout the County, which has led to blocked storm drains and surface street closings. Basements in residential neighborhoods are flooded as well as some downed tree limbs from high winds.

It will take days for the flood waters to recede and for public works crews to clear debris and fully assess the damage.

Citizens are urged to use extreme caution when driving on any roadways that are littered with debris or other obstructions. Motorists should not drive into any standing water. All persons should stay away from any rushing water and should seek higher ground in the face of rising flash flood waters.

The State of Emergency shall remain in effect for the next five days unless sooner terminated by the County Executive.

All municipalities as well as residents should call 911 in the case of an emergency.
