Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. today announced that the region’s newest shopping experience will begin on Saturday, June 25th as the Oneida County Public Market opens at historic Union Station at Bagg’s Square in Downtown Utica – featuring a unique, diverse blend of fresh produce, artisan foods and crafted local products.

The Oneida County Public Market will be open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and is located outdoors in the parking lot facing the train tracks.
“This is a very exciting opportunity to celebrate local commerce and community,” Picente said. “Through Oneida County’s long-standing partnership with Oneida County Cooperative Extension, we have worked with a number of vendors and other partners to provide a unique blend of vendors committed for the year who will be offering fresh produce, meats, cheeses, yogurts, prepared food, along with arts and crafts.”

Picente said the market grew out of his commitment to explore all possible alternatives to increased economic activity. “My goal is to build up the economic and community activity downtown, so that we can spur even more redevelopment and more private investment in the heart of Utica. Union Station is a gem, and the entire site has outstanding potential. The Public Market is a creative, 21ct century way to capitalize on that potential, and create a special gathering place for families and friends.”

Picente noted that the Oneida County Public Market will be undergoing expansion and development throughout the summer. He said that Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County has hired Brix and Company, an internationally-renowned developer of markets, marketplaces and unique urban destinations, to work with the County and develop the concept to its fullest. The long-term goal of the project is to create a year round market bringing various vendors together with local residents. Picente said, “I hope we can see our families and friends in the region enjoy the new Oneida County Public Market for a special, vibrant place for fresh flavors and fun.”

Each week, the Market will feature live entertainment and a growing roster of vendors.  Interested vendors should contact the Market at info@oneidacountypublicmarket.com.
