Picente: Grant will help New York Custom Processing, LLC, to Create 14 New Jobs
Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente, Jr. announced today that New York Custom Processing, LLC, has received a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in the amount of $210,000. The Office of Community Renewal administers the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program for the State of New York. The NYS CDBG program provides financial assistance to eligible cities, towns, and villages.
The grant will assist NY Custom Processing, LLC, with purchasing equipment and working capital as they commence operation of a USDA-inspected and approved slaughterhouse and custom meat processing operation. NYCP will cater primarily to the slaughter and processing of beef cattle, with additional pork processing and seasonal slaughter of animals such as lambs and goats from the local area. Oneida County worked with Mohawk Valley EDGE in securing and administering the grant.
The grant funds will also assist in the creation of 14 new jobs; NYCP’s hiring goal will be to utilize local labor and provide training as needed. The new facility is estimated to service livestock producers in an approximate 75-mile radius, with the majority of customers located within 25 miles of the plant.
NYCP will operate at the site of the former Schaller’s Slaughterhouse in Bridgewater, which was purchased in 2009 and renovated by a group of local dairymen with over $1.0 million dollars of investment in physical plant expansion and equipment upgrades. The new state-of-the-art facility will be leased to NYCP, which will provide the management expertise and operational experience in meat processing to make the business successful.
“We are very pleased that we were able to work with our economic development partner, MV EDGE, to assist New York Custom Processing in their startup slaughterhouse and meat processing operation and creation of jobs,” said Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente, Jr. He added that, “This type of business will add to the economic viability of Oneida County’s agricultural livestock producers.”
