2013 Stop DWI High School Baseball Classic Final Games

The 2nd Annual STOP DWI High School Baseball Classic hosted by the Oneida County Youth Bureau was held Friday April 26th and Saturday April 27th at DeLutis Field in Rome. The Classic ran in conjunction with Oneida County STOP DWI’S Annual Teen Traffic Safety Education Program that was presented to Oneida County high school students from April 22nd through May 1st; prior to the ball, prom and graduation season. The goal of the Classic is to expand our mission; making more youth aware of the consequences that result when people make destructive decisions, by reaching more families (elementary school, middle school and high school students, college students, young adults/parents, etc.) and other youth where the Teen Traffic Safety Education Program wasn’t presented.

Again, mission accomplished! During the two day event 1,800 people attended and along with the players and coaches from the participating teams, took advantage of the outstanding educational presentations by our partners. The New York State Department of Transportation gave presentations on texting and driving and work zone safety. The New York State Police used their rollover simulator and presented on all aspects of wearing a seat belt properly, the good and the bad of airbags and crashes that end in fire or submersion. Insight House presented on the evils of alcohol and tobacco use and students took part in their inter-active competitions while wearing “drunk” goggles. The Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES-CORE PBIS specialists made people aware of the terrible occurrences resulting from bullying. The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office finger printed children and took pictures for SAFE CHILD identification cards. Our new presenter, the National Baseball Hall of Fame gave presentations and handed out literature on their BASE (Be A Superior Example) Program. Educational materials from Oneida County STOP DWI, AAA and Derek Jeter’s “Turn 2” Foundation were also distributed.

Admission to the Classic was free and every adult was given a bag filled with educational materials to be shared at home with their family. The Classic featured 10 area high school teams representing all of New York State’s high school classes; AA, A, B, C and D. All the games were broadcast live on local ESPN affiliates; 1310 AM, 1350 AM, 1230 AM and 99.1 FM.

Once again, feedback from the presenters, media, spectators, sponsors, participating coaches and players was overwhelmingly positive. Everyone was in agreement that the educational presentations were excellent and invaluable in making our communities healthier and safer.

The 3rd Annual STOP DWI High School Baseball Classic will return to Donovan Stadium at Murnane Field in Utica next year and is scheduled for Friday April 25th and Saturday April 26th
