May is Hepatitis Awareness Month
The month of May is designated as Hepatitis Awareness Month in the United States. During May, the CDC, along with the Oneida County Health Department and community partners, work to shed light on this hidden epidemic by raising awareness of viral hepatitis and encouraging the people at high risk to get tested.
National Infant Immunization Week April 18th-25th 2015
National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) is an annual observance to highlight the importance of protecting infants from vaccine-preventable diseases and to celebrate the achievements of immunization programs in promoting healthy communities throughout the United States. This year, NIIW is scheduled to be held April 18-25, 2015.
FDA Public Health Notice
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has notified state, local, tribal and territorial public health officials regarding Bo Ying Compound, an herbal product. It is a powdered product marketed for treatment of influenza, fever, sneezing and nasal discharge in infants and children and may contain excessive levels of lead. The product is labeled in Chinese and English and is marketed in retail outlets and online. Oneida County Health Department (OCHD) warns parents and caregivers not to buy or use Bo Ying Compound, due to the potential risk of lead poisoning.

Unlike many other cancers, cervical cancer is preventable. Take some time this January to observe Cervical Health Awareness Month and learn what you can do to detect and prevent cervical cancer. “It’s important for women to know their risk for cervical cancer and talk with their health care provider about how it can be prevented,” said Phyllis Ellis, Director of the Oneida County Health Department.
National Influenza Vaccination Week – December 7th – 13th
The Oneida County Health Department reminds everyone that the best protection against the flu is the flu vaccine and encourages everyone 6-months and older who has not yet received a flu shot to do so during National Influenza Immunization Week – December 7th – 13th.
Lyme Disease Still a Risk
Health Department Warns Against Tick Bites
“Each year we see more confirmed cases of Lyme disease. The risk is increasing for Oneida County residents,” said Phyllis Ellis, Director of the Oneida County Health Department. At this time of year, hunters, hikers, and other people spending time outdoors may find ticks on themselves. Until there is a consistent snow covering on the ground, ticks will remain viable outdoors.
