Picente Reports on Student Vaccination Progress, Urges for Continued Push
Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. reported on the progress of the COVID-19 vaccination process among local students today and urged school districts and parents to continue the push to protect the health and safety of county youth.
“Vaccinating every possible person in Oneida County is the only way to end this pandemic and move this community forward,” Picente said. “A crucial part of that process is securing the health and safety of schools. I am pleased with the progress we have made in vaccinating our students so far, but we must do more. I challenge our districts and parents to increase these rates even higher, so that our schools can return to normal learning environments where our children can thrive.”
As of June 8, 2021, 992 12-17 year-olds have received their first dose of vaccine through a county-operated POD set up at a school district site or other location. The Whitesboro Central School District has vaccinated the most students with 233, followed by the Rome City School District at 101, the Utica City School District at 94 and the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill School District at 80.

Oneida County partnered with Upstate Family Health Center to administer vaccine at the PODS conducted in the Adirondack, Camden, Holland Patent, Oriskany, Sauquoit and Westmoreland school districts.
“The Oneida County Department of Health has worked closely with local school districts to provide COVID-19 vaccines for students, families and staff who are interested in receiving it,” said Patricia N. Kilburn, Ed. D., District Superintendent of the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES. “We appreciate all that the county and schools are doing to protect and support the region with vaccinations, and we remain optimistic about the prospect of children attending school in-person and learning alongside their peers, with less restriction in the future."
According to the New York State COVID-19 Vaccination Tracker, which only provides a breakdown of vaccinations by age range and percentage, 22% of Oneida County 12-15 year-olds have received their first dose and nearly 8% are fully vaccinated.
