Picente: County Holds Summer Youth Employment Program Outreach in Utica, Rome

Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. today announced that Oneida County Workforce Development will be holding an outreach session for the 2012 Oneida County Summer Youth Employment Program at several locations in Utica and Rome.

“Oneida County’s Summer Youth Employment Program is offering young people from all parts of the county the opportunity to gain work experience and also to earn money despite the tough economic times,” Picente said. “The Office of Workforce Development is working with community sites and local agencies to develop some very good work sites and projects so that young people who participate can learn and earn this summer. We are holding this outreach session in Rome because we want to be sure that all youth have the opportunity to become involved in our program.”

Most youths in the program work about 50 hours four to six weeks, beginning in early July. They will earn $7.25 per hour.  Youths are placed in well-supervised community worksites or assigned to special projects. To be eligible, youths must be between the ages of 14 and 18 and meet certain income criteria.

“The Summer Youth Employment Program provides young people with meaningful work experience and also helps them earn money that they and their families can use,” said David Mathis, Director of Oneida County Workforce Development. Mathis said Workforce Development is currently only accepting pre-applications. Youth who have applied will be contacted in early June to complete the application process.

Rome:

May 9 & May 10 , Rome Working Solutions, 300 W. Dominick Street, 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.

May 16 & May 17, Rome Y, 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.

May 24, Rome City Hall, 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Utica:

May 15, JFK Middle School, 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

May 14, May 21, May 23, MVCC Education Center, 524 Elizabeth Street, 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
