Picente Honors Utica Star Will Smith

Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente, Jr. today honored Utica native Will Smith, a member of the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints.

“Will Smith of Utica has shown greatness as an outstanding football player with the World Champion New Orleans Saints of the NFL, building on a career that began here in Oneida County during his days at Utica’s Proctor High School,” Picente said in a proclamation naming April 3rd as Will Smith Day in Oneida County.

Picente’s proclamation noted that Smith has used his status as a local hero among area athletes to help young people learn the values that can help them success as adults.
“Will Smith brings young people a very clear and simple message that is true in all walks of life: Success goes to those who will work tirelessly to prepare themselves so that when the day of opportunity is at hand, they can emerge as champions,” Picente said. “Will Smith is reaching back into the community that helped him learn the lessons of life that have made him strong inside by helping young Mohawk Valley athletes learn the same lessons he has learned about developing the inner toughness for success, and using athletics as a springboard to the future in the game of life.”

Picente said that in honoring Smith, he is also reminding all local young people that they, too, can be champions. “Will Smith has risen to the top, as part of a team that rose to the top this past season, by applying the traditional values of hard work, diligence, focusing on the future, and giving the job every hand every last ounce of commitment and strength,” Picente said in his proclamation.
