Oneida County Department of Public Works

Preserving and developing improved public infrastructure and properties.

Overview

The Oneida County Department of Public Works is broken down into three divisions that are committed to developing better roads, highways, parks and recreation facilities, government buildings, sanitation systems, and utilities for our constituents.

The Division of Highways and Bridges is comprised of three garages: Oriskany, Taberg and Barneveld.  Highways and Bridges is responsible for maintenance of the county highway system, traffic control, snow removal and repair and maintenance of all county owned vehicles.  Highways and Bridges has also participated in The Shared Service program for 41 years. This program was renewed with all Cities, Towns and Villages within our County for the years (2021 – 2026), this important document allows any municipality to share equipment and manpower on individual projects throughout the year without having to buy a piece of equipment needed to do a specific job saving their residents thousands of dollars each year.

The Engineering Division provides professional engineering support and technical assistance for a variety of public works and transportation projects undertaken by the County of Oneida.  It is our duty to uphold the highest professional and ethical standards in recommending, planning, managing, and accomplishing these projects. More specifically, the Engineering Division oversees capital projects and maintenance programs, ensures the safety of county roads by supervising bridge condition inspections, safety inspections and inventory files for all county owned bridges.  The Division of Engineering also works to aid and provide expertise to towns, cities, and local highway departments, as well as having a presence on community committees and boards such as Oneida Water Quality Coordinating Committee, Herkimer Oneida County Highway Transportation Study, and the Environmental Management Council to name a few.

The Division of Buildings and Grounds preserves, repairs, renovates designated buildings, and grounds, and helps provide a safe and secure environment for county employees and the public. Annual tasks include landscaping, debris removal, snow and ice management, renovations, and relocation.   Buildings and Grounds also maintains energy management systems owned or leased by Oneida County.
