NATIONAL DEPRESSION SCREENING DAY

Thursday, October 7, 2010 has been designated as National Depression Screening Day (NDSD). Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente, Jr. is pleased to announce a local schedule of screenings for depression (and anxiety, bipolar disorder and PTSD, too) held in conjunction with this event.

Linda M. Nelson, Oneida County Mental Health Commissioner, cites the following statistics particular to depression in adults:

  • Depression affects nearly 10 percent of Americans ages 18 and older in a given year, or more than 19 million people.
  • More Americans suffer from depression than coronary heart disease (7 million), cancer (6 million) and AIDS (200,000) combined.
  • Depression is among the most treatable of psychiatric illnesses. Between 70 percent and 80 percent of people with depression respond positively to treatment, and almost all patients gain some relief from their symptoms. But first, depression has to be recognized
Additional information can be found on the County’s website (www.ocgov.net)Mental Health Department link.
