 Picente Announces Holiday Sobriety Checkpoints

Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente, Jr. today announced that the Oneida County STOP-DWI Program, in conjunction with Oneida County Law Enforcement Agencies, will be stepping up efforts to keep drivers safe by increasing sobriety checkpoints and specialized DWI patrols starting this week.

“The holiday season should be a time of joy and celebration,” Picente said. “I don’t want tragedy to ruin this special time, and turn a time of joy into a time of sorrow.”

Picente urged county residents to include plans for a designated driver in their holiday party preparations. “With winter weather, busy roadways and hurried traffic, driving is enough of a challenge. If you plan to drink at a holiday party, make sure there is someone who can get you home safely.”

Picente said members of participating law enforcement agencies will strictly enforce speed limits, seat belt, and drinking and driving laws and will be on the lookout for aggressive driving during this time to encourage traveler safety.

“The best way to promote highway safety in these busy holiday times is to be visible and aggressive in enforcing laws so that we can protect all the families on our highways,” Picente said.
